Faculty and Staff

Spartanburg School District 4 participates in the South Carolina State Department of Education's Teacher of the Year program.  Each year, the district's four schools select a Teacher of the Year.  The district Teacher of the Year is then selected from the schools' Teacher of the Year candidates through an interview process.

Woodruff Middle School's 2012 Teacher of the Year is Mrs. Tina Harrell, Media Specialist.  She was also selected to represent Spartanburg District 4 as District Teacher of the Year.

This is Mrs. Harrell’s fourth year at Woodruff Middle, although she is a familiar face in Spartanburg 4, having taught English at WMS and serving as Woodruff Elementary School’s Media Specialist before remaining home a few years to raise her children. Mrs. Harrell creates a warm, inviting atmosphere that encourages students to visit the Media Center. She loves to share new books with teachers and students and celebrates when she can hook an eager reader with just the right book. Mrs. Harrell promotes literacy by sponsoring the Real Men Read club and by beginning the Cubs Create organization that allows students to couple literacy and the use of technology to produce school service projects. I am very honored to have been selected by my peers as Woodruff Middle School’s Teacher of the Year, says Mrs. Harrell. They have taught me how to set high expectations while creatively teaching so that students are engaged in learning. I enjoy working alongside my colleagues as we try to lead by example both to inspire and motivate our students to be lifelong readers and learners.  Woodruff Middle School is honored to have Mrs. Tina Harrell as a part of the WMS Family!

National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential achieved upon successful completion of a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize effective and accomplished teachers who meet high standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do.  As part of the certification process, candidates complete 10 assessments that are reviewed by trained teachers in their certificate areas. The assessments include four portfolio entries that feature teaching practice and six constructed response exercises that assess content knowledge.   Woodruff Middle School has eight National Board Certified faculty members, including Ashley Bennett, Cassandra Barksdale, Jami Guker, Carrie Potter, Mary Runyans, Chad Shaver, Mandy Shaver, and Selena Turnipseed.
